Crutch walking
Disease Information
Overview
After a surgery or accident, your child may need crutches to move about. Our health care professionals are specially trained to fit your child for crutches and teach them how to use them safely.
Remember:
- The top of the crutches should be at least two finger widths deep from the armpit (measuring when the shoulders are relaxed)
- Your child should always keep crutches nearby so they're in within reach when needed
- Low-heeled shoes that won't slip off, like sneakers, should be worn
- At school, ask teachers to let your child out of class a little early; that way, they can avoid fighting crowds in the hallways and stairs
