Overview

Diseases caused by smoking kill almost half a million people in the United States every year; despite anti-smoking campaigns and medical warnings, over 6000 children and teenagers smoke their first cigarette each day (and half of those will become regular smokers).

  • According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), 90 percent of new smokers are children or teenagers.
  • Approximately one-third of those smokers will eventually die of smoking-related illnesses.
  • 70 percent of adolescent smokers wished they had never started smoking in the first place.
  • According to the American Heart Association (AHA), diseases caused by smoking kill more than 440,000 people in the United States each year.
