Basic science and clinical research continue to be a major focus of the Department of Otolaryngology and Communication Enhancement. Gabriel Corfas, PhD, is the director of basic science research in Otolaryngology. His laboratory is looking into what contributes to loss of hearing and balance with the aim of developing tools to treat these disorders.

Hearing loss and quality of life
Amy Szarkowski, PhD, explores quality of life issues in children with hearing loss and their families, particularly their effects on social-emotional functioning. In her work, she also seeks to better understand the impact of hearing loss on the family as a whole.
