The Gastroenterology Procedure Unit (GPU) at Children’s Hospital Boston is a full-service unit providing an array of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures in a safe, comfortable environment.
Our expert team works closely with other departments and divisions in the hospital, accommodating both routine and urgent care in a timely fashion. Patients are generally referred to the GPU through Children’s Department of Gastroenterology.
Offering more than the typical gastroenterology (GI) endoscopy center, our specialists provide world-renowned care to children with gastrointestinal, pancreatic and hepatobiliary disorders. In addition, we collaborate with Children’s respiratory disease specialists in the care of aerodigestive disorders.
Nineteen attending physicians, 12 nurses and six endoscopy technicians support the day-to-day practice of the unit. All nurses and physicians are certified in pediatric advanced life support (PALS).
Our newly designed facility opened in the spring of 2006 and is located on the fifth floor of the Pavilion Building at Children’s Hospital Boston. The facility includes a reception and family waiting area, a patient intake and post-procedure recovery area with separate isolation rooms, four large procedure rooms equipped for moderate sedation or general anesthesia, portable digital fluoroscopy, high-definition video monitors and connections for live video conferences.
The Gastroenterology Procedure Unit at Boston Children's Hospital performs cutting-edge research studies in a number of areas, including:
- use of endoscopic ultrasound
- sedation for procedures
- advanced imaging for occult GI bleeding
- chronic esophageal disease
- polyposis
- motility disorders
- inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
