Max was an active, happy toddler when he was diagnosed with Stage IV neuroblastoma. A football-sized abdominal tumor compressing his organs and affecting his breathing and circulation put Max through 10 rounds of chemotherapy, a 14-hour surgery, and seven rounds of local radiation in just two years. Some scientists still debate the existence of cancer stem cells – rare cells that can singlehandedly perpetuate a tumor, and possibly make it more aggressive. But others have moved on, isolating candidate cancer stem cells and documenting their distinctive characteristics and markers. 
In an effort to make her patients' hospital stay as easy as possible , Dr. Leslie Lehmann and her team have enacted an innovative solution. Each week, she and the unit’s head nurse, conduct Patient Satisfaction Rounds, visiting with each family, and asking directly: What can we be doing better? In the three years they’ve been doing these rounds, significant changes have occurred. 
Dr. Williams receives American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy Outstanding Achievement Award
David Williams, MD, chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, director of Translational Research at Children's and associate chair of Pediatric Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has been selected by the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ASGCT) as the recipient of its 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award.
This award is the highest honor bestowed by the Society. It recognizes the ASGCT member who has achieved a pioneering research success, a specific high-impact accomplishment or a lifetime of significant contributions to the field of gene and cell therapy.
Dr. Nathan honored by American Society of Hematology
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) has presented the Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology, the Society's highest honor, to David Nathan, MD, former physician-in-chief at Children's, president emeritus of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Robert A. Stranahan Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
