Research Overview

Peter V. Hauschka, Ph.D. directs a bone biology research laboratory at Boston Children's Hospital within the Orthopedic Center. He was educated at Amherst College (B.A., cum laude, Biophysics) and The Johns Hopkins University (Ph.D., cum laude, Biochemistry). After postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins and the University of Colorado, he joined the research staff at Boston Children's Hospital. He studies the molecular and cellular processes involved in bone growth, and diseases that attack the skeletal system. As an Associate Professor at Harvard Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, he teaches medical and dental students and mentors students and fellows in laboratory research. He is the Director of Scientific Resources at Boston Children's Hospital and chairs the Research Faculty Council.

Major Research Interests

Cell biology, developmental biology and biochemistry of mineralized tissues Regulation of osteogenesis:

  • osteoinduction by bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)

  • mesenchymal stem cells/pericytes - role in osteogenesis vs. vascular calcification

  • biomechanical regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts - role of nitric oxide

  • osteoclast recruitment, differentiation, and activation - matrix protein signaling

  • Role of the osteoblast in heamatopoiesis

  • Cell biology of cancer metastasis to bone

  • Osteocalcin structure and function; vitamin K-dependent Ca2+-binding proteins
