Fetal-Neonatal Neurology Program

Babies who have experienced a brain injury or have a congenital neurological condition need intense, specialized care. At the Fetal-Neonatal Neurology Program at Children’s Hospital Boston, we provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for these young children. Because newborns’ brains are in a crucial window of rapid development, we identify problems as early as possible and intervene quickly.

We follow newborns who have been seen in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) of Children’s, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as well as other infants who are referred to us by their pediatricians. After your baby has been discharged from the NICU, we will continue to monitor her neurological progress and to provide treatments that will help her long-term development.

Also, we can meet with you during pregnancy if your obstetrician suspects that your baby has a brain abnormality. The neurologists on our team are part of the Children’s Advanced Fetal Care Center. Prenatal consultations are conducted there, and once your baby is born, we look after her in our neonatal neurology clinic.

Our Clinical Research

The neurologists on the Fetal-Neonatal Neurology team conduct a wide range of clinical research studies to improve our understanding of problems in early brain development and to find effective new treatments. See the Our innovative approach tab to find out more.

Patient story

A spring 2008 article tells the story of one of our patients and covers some of the work we are doing to find treatments for seizures in newborns.
