Nadeem Y. Karimbux, DMD, MMSc, is the resident clinician in our Periodontics Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. An Associate Professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Karimbux visits our dental clinic every other week to provide specialty care to children with periodontal diseases.
Treating gum disease and maintaining oral health is a top priority for periodontists. Included in our treatments for periodontitis and gum disease is a “deep scaling” surgery that allows us to clean underneath the gum and restore lost tissue. We also team up with members of the Department of Denistry at Children's, such as prostodontists and orthodontists, to plan and perform tissue transplants and dental implants that will correct anomalies of the gum.
In addition to treating children who are well, Dr. Karimbux also works with children who have special medical needs such as autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. Our staff understands that children with special needs may have a lot of plaque and tartar buildup that they’re not able to clean with regular brushing and flossing. To maintain the oral health of these children, we’ll follow monitor them closely and make recommendations to parents and caregivers on how to promote good oral health habits at home. We also know that children who’ve had transplants of any kind may be required to take certain medications that cause overgrowth of the gums. For these children, we offer surgical treatment to reduce that growth.
Since we work within Children’s, our faculty understands how certain medical needs may interfere with a child’s oral health. We’re familiar with the dental aspects of any given condition and we’ll work with other members of your child’s medical team in order to provide the highest quality care.
