Surgical Nutrition and Metabolism Program
Children's Surgical Nutrition and Metabolism Program focuses upon the development and application of state-of-the-art surgical and nutritional therapies to attain optimal growth and development in pediatric surgical patients.
Wherever possible, minimally invasive surgical techniques are utilized in an effort to limit discomfort and shorten hospital stay. Specifically, patients with short bowel syndrome are evaluated and treated in the multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation at Boston Children's Hospital.
The clinic is staffed by experienced specialists in pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition, and pediatric surgery. A dedicated registered dietician, nurse practitioner, home TPN nurse specialist, and pharmacist are also involved in each patients care.
The goal of the clinic is to provide an integrated diagnostic and treatment plan for each patient and family.
The program director, Dr. Tom Jaksic maintains an active research laboratory in surgical nutrition and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition.
