Kidney Transplant Program

About the Kidney Transplant Program

Our collaborative staff includes specialists with extensive knowledge and experience in kidney transplantation of infants and children. These specialists include:

  • transplant surgeons
  • transplant nephrologists and urologists
  • transplant coordinators
  • pharmacists
  • social workers
  • psychologists
  • Child Life specialists
  • dietitians
  • pathologists
  • an experienced pediatric nursing staff with expertise in day-to-day transplant patient care

Together, we bring an expertise to the diagnosis and treatment of every condition resulting in end-stage renal disease in children, including:

  • congenital and familial disorders of kidney and bladder development
  • acquired diseases such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and lupus

Pediatric focus

We are the only program in New England that is entirely focused on pediatric patients. Children and adolescents are our priority, as illustrated in our team’s instrumental role in changing the way pediatric patients were listed on the organ waiting list. Thanks to our intervention, patients 18 years old and younger now receive priority listing.

A team approach

Our comprehensive evaluation process involves patient family consultations with many specialists, including those in urology, infections disease and psychology. We are closely integrated with Children’s Nephrology Program, which offers a continuum of services, including diagnosis and treatment of renal disorders, pediatric dialysis, and kidney transplant.

Specialized pediatric dialysis

Children’s offers the only dedicated pediatric dialysis unit in New England. This means that we offer the highest possible quality care for young patients requiring dialysis, and we are able to perform transplants under optimal conditions.

Training the next generation of experts

Children’s Hospital Boston has the largest training program in the nation for physicians specializing in the care of children with renal disease. In addition, we have the largest number of NIH-sponsored pediatric kidney transplant research protocols in the world, and the only accredited pediatric kidney transplant fellowship program.
