Research

Norman Spack, MD, co-director of the Gender Management Service (GeMS) Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital is part of the team that wrote groundbreaking new guidelines about how to treat children with Gender Identity Disorder. They suggest that at the first signs of puberty, physicians delay the onset of puberty and wait until the child is approximately 16 years old to begin any sort of hormone therapy involved in a gender transition.

More research about the long-term follow up of these children is also underway. We’re looking to see if their bone strength is normal and if that, along with pre-pubertal treatment, can help female-to-male achieve a taller height.
