Community outreach
Children’s Hospital Boston has extensive Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) organization and offers monthly courses which are open to the community. We also work with our affiliates to organize and teach classes at their local facilities in an effort to enhance the health and wellbeing of the children and families in our local community.
Children’s Hospital Boston is actively involved in the Student Career Opportunity Outreach Program (SCOOP). Nurses from our facility visit high schools in the metropolitan Boston area and encourage students to enter the nursing profession. Seven times throughout the academic year, the students travel to Children’s Hospital Boston to take a tour of the hospital and have lunch and a panel discussion with nurses of various specialties.
Children’s Hospital Boston is committed to educating families about important health topics such as asthma, obesity, mental health and injury prevention. Children’s Hospital has partnered with neighborhood health clinics in the Community Asthma Initiative which provides nurse case management, home visits and education for patients and their families. The ThinkFirst Boston program, established by Children’s Hospital Boston, travels to schools in the metropolitan Boston area to educate students and teachers on the prevention of head and spinal cord injuries. The program heightens awareness of the importance of using seatbelts, wearing helmets while biking or playing sports and other injury prevention measures.
Children’s Hospital Boston welcomes crew members from our vendor air provider, Boston MedFlight, to our facility to achieve and maintain their pediatric airway skills in addition to providing frequent ride-a-longs with our team in order to gain pediatric and neonatal transport experience. Both organizations also have a reciprocal agreement for Communication Specialists to observe in their dispatch center in an effort to improve system-wide quality of service.
Our team members are actively involved in outreach and education to healthcare providers within our service area as well as within the transport community. Members of the Children’s Hospital team teach Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic courses at several schools throughout the New England Area. In addition to teaching at paramedic refresher and first responder courses in our area we are also responsible for an annual lecture on Pediatric Emergencies at Boston College. Transport Team members have lectured at community hospitals in our area and will, upon request, return to any community hospital to do patient follow-up and case review with their staff. In the past we have lectured as neonatal and pediatric transport specialists at both regional and national conferences, the most recent being the 2009 Air Medical Transport Conference in San Jose, California.
