Quality & Safety
Our Reputation for Excellence
In addition to grading our own performance by posting our quality and safety data on this website, there are a number of national and state organizations that report our performance publicly.
For example, we have received high marks from The Leapfrog Group, a national consortium of employers that evaluates hospitals in order to make better health care decisions. In its most recent report, Boston Children’s Hospital was named one of Leapfrog’s “Top Hospitals” based on quality, safety and efficiency. We were one of only eight children’s hospitals in the country to make the list. For other public quality and safety reports click here.
Boston Children’s Hospital has also been awarded Magnet status for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Only 6% of hospitals in the country have achieved this status.
NRC Picker (NRCP), a division of National Research Corporation, has selected member Boston Children’s Hospital as a recipient of its 2011 Path to Excellence award. The winners were selected from NRC Picker's extensive database of members for their performance over the last four quarters. Children’s was selected for its top ranking in the category of Children’s Hospital: Overall Rating.
Finally, in its 2012-2013 special issue, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Boston Children’s as the #1 pediatric hospital overall in the nation. In addition, we are the top children’s hospital in the country for Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Nephrology, and Neurology & Neurosurgery,
In addition to ranking #1 in three specialities, Boston Children's is also ranked in the top 4 of every other specialty. We rank second nationwide in Cancer, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Urology, third nationwide in Neonatology and Orthopedics, and fourth in Pulmonology. The U.S. News rankings are based on reputation among pediatric specialists, medical outcomes (such as cancer survival), and care-related indicators of quality (such as nurse staffing and the availability of specialized services).
