Olympian, Coach and Local Man Launch New Metrowest Triathlon
Triathletes can race to raise funds for Children's Hospital Boston
January 21, 2009
Boston, Mass. -- Beijing Olympic triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker, his coach Tim Crowley and local triathlon director Bill Burnett have joined forces to found a new triathlon in Marlborough, MA on July 26.
Burnett founded the Cohasset Triathlon two years ago, and will be expanding his 2009 Commonwealth Triathlon Series this summer to Marlborough and Gloucester. The race will be a sprint triathlon consisting of a quarter-mile swim in the Fort Meadows Reservoir, a 15-mile bike ride and a 3.2-mile run. The race field is limited to 600 individual racers and 30 relay teams.
In addition to keeping their bodies fit and healthy through the race, triathletes can also help sick kids get better by raising funds for Children's Hospital Boston. Children's is the official charitable partner of the first annual Marlborough Triathlon. Burnett, Crowley, Shoemaker and his wife Alicia recently visited Children's patients.
"Triathletes who join this race aren't required to fundraise. But as a person who has fundraised for a charity partner before and spent time at Children's Hospital Boston, I can attest that thinking about helping a sick child during training has inspired me to finish my races at my best. The extra time it takes to fundraise pales in comparison to the trials some kids face when in the hospital" says Shoemaker.
Children's Hospital Boston's Miles for Miracles Running Program coordinates teams for the Boston Marathon, ING NYC Marathon, Falmouth Road Race, Disney Marathon and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
"The Marlborough Triathlon is Children's Hospital's first foray into the triathlon world," says Carola Cadley, Children's Hospital Trust's Associate Vice President of Corporate Development and Marketing. "We're thrilled and honored that the founders chose Children's as its charitable partner. Many of our current athletes participate in a variety of races throughout the year and will be excited to add this event to their calendars."
