Bernard re-joins Boston Children’s Hospital as part of a distinguished career of more than three decades, leading research groups at DFCI, HMS and Duke University. Throughout his career, Bernard has been deeply involved in the education and mentoring of graduate students, postdocs and junior faculty. He was an Instructor in the grant proposal writing course for graduate students at Harvard Medical School, served as an appointed faculty member of the Duke School of Medicine Academy of Mentors, which provides intensive coaching for fellows and early-stage faculty colleagues applying for K-series career development awards, R21 grants or first R01 grants. Bernard was also the course director for the F31 proposal writing course for Duke PhD students, coaching them in the development of a total of 30 NIH pre-doctoral fellowship proposals and served as an informal mentor and writing coach for trainees and junior faculty members at Duke Medical School.
Bernard received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Geneva in Switzerland, his Ph.D. in biology from Rockefeller University and trained as a research fellow in David Baltimore’s laboratory at the Whitehead Institute.
