Understanding What a Medical Emergency Is

Some situations clearly require emergency medical attention, such as a stroke. But other cases are not so clear cut. What about a swollen ankle, unexplained fever or puncture wound? Symptoms that indicate a medical emergency may include but not limited to you or your child having:

  • Difficulty breathing and/or shortness of breath
  • Chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure lasting two or more minutes
  • Fainting, sudden dizziness or weakness
  • Changes in vision
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Confusion or changes in mental status, unusual behavior or difficulty waking
  • Any sudden or severe pain
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Coughing or vomiting blood
  • Suicidal or homicidal feelings
  • Unusual abdominal pain

We also offer 24-hour emergency phone service every day of the year (508-548-6969)
