  • The Best in Care Program is 100 percent patient and family nomination driven. All nominations are submitted by patients and/or family members.
  • Every Best in Care nominee receives a congratulatory letter from hospital leadership.
  • Patients/families vote to select Best in Care Award winners.
  • Each year, one or more staff members or volunteers from Boston Children’s are honored with a Best in Care Award.

History of the Best in Care Program

Susan Shaw, former vice president, associate chief nurse, and director of clinical operations, capped off her decades-long career at Boston Children’s with the launch of the Best in Care Program in 2017. A long-time co-chair of the Boston Children’s Hospital Family Advisory Council and staunch advocate for elevating the patient, family, and nurse voices, Susan was inspired by Family Advisory Council members who sought a formal way to recognize workforce members and volunteers for going above and beyond. Susan was the first recipient of the Best in Care Award in 2017 for her unwavering commitment to elevating the voices of nurses, patients, and families as partners for care and strategic progress at Boston Children’s.
