Frequently Asked Questions | Overview

Does exercise testing hurt?

Most exercise tests cause little or no pain.

Is exercise testing safe?

The number of serious complications from an exercise test is less than 1 percent. However, we monitor patients closely during the exercise test, and end the test right away if the patient feels ill or if we find any problems. We also have medications, equipment, and staff available to treat any health problem that may develop during the exercise test.

What should my child wear to an exercise test?

We suggest wearing comfortable, loose-fitting exercise clothing, such as shorts, sweatpants, a t-shirt, and sneakers.

How long does an exercise test take?

The entire test usually takes less than 45 minutes. Pre-exercise set-up and testing takes about 10 minutes, and the actual testing usually lasts about 10 to 15 minutes. After the test, we monitor the patient for about 10 minutes.

Can parents stay with their child during the exercise test?

Yes.

Do children need to be a certain age to have exercise testing?

It depends on the child, as some of the tests require a certain amount of cooperation. We have performed exercise tests on children as young as 3 years old. For metabolic measurements, children usually need to be at least 6, but we have worked with children as young as 4.

How long do results take?

We usually have a preliminary report 15 minutes after the test is complete, and a final report within 24 to 48 hours.
