Sleep, Pain, and Adolescent Health Survey

A survey study assessing the relationship between sleep, pain, and substance use in adolescents with acute and chronic pain

Principal Investigator: Joe Kossowsky, PhD, MMSc
Collaborators: Christine Greco, MD
Research Staff: Justin Chimoff, BS and Camila Koike

What is the purpose of this study?
This survey study seeks to assess patterns of substance use, pain and sleep disturbances in adolescents with chronic and acute pain, as well as factors that could influence them, such as mood and anxiety. Results of this study will help us better understand how patients with pain conditions and sleep disturbances use various substances and the reasons for doing so. This will allow us to improve our current interventions with adolescents suffering from chronic and acute pain and sleep disturbances.

What does the study involve?
If you agree to participate, you will complete an online survey once, with the option to complete a follow up survey once a year for three additional years. Each survey takes approximately 30-35 minutes to complete and is related to factors that could influence the association between substance use, pain, and sleep characteristics. Since this is a completely online study, you do not need to come to the hospital for any visits.

Who is eligible to participate?
You can participate if you:

  • Are between 14 to 18 years of age
  • Are seeking treatment for acute or chronic pain at Boston Children’s Hospital

Will I receive payment for this study?
As a token of appreciation for your time and participation in the study, you will earn a $20 Amazon gift card for completing the survey. You will be given the option to repeat the survey once a year for an additional 3 years and will be compensated if you elect to do so with a $15 Amazon gift card at each follow up survey.
