Boston Children’s Hospital Chief Executive Officer Sandra L. Fenwick announced today that she plans to retire in March of next year, after more than twenty years of leadership of the nation’s top-ranked pediatric hospital, including the past eight years as CEO. The hospital’s Board of Trustees has initiated a succession planning process.

Ms. Fenwick joined Boston Children’s in 1999 as Senior Vice President for Business Development and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer later that year. She was named President in 2008 and Chief Executive Officer in 2013. Throughout her tenure as CEO, Boston Children’s has been ranked the #1 pediatric hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

“It has been an extraordinary honor to lead such an exceptional team of talented and devoted people over the past eight years,” said Fenwick. “I am enormously proud of all we have accomplished together to advance and improve the health and well-being of children both here in our local communities and around the world. I want to thank every member of the Boston Children’s team for their countless contributions and their enduring commitment to our patients and families, whose lives they work so hard every day to improve and transform.”

Ms. Fenwick has been a leading advocate for a recommitment to investing in children — especially pediatric health care — in the face of growing threats to their health and well-being.

During her time as CEO, she has led the hospital’s efforts to:

• Transform pediatric medicine through scientific discovery and the development of breakthrough therapies and cures.
• Expand the world’s largest pediatric research enterprise to strengthen the health and well-being of children worldwide by seeking new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of childhood and adult diseases.
• Develop the most advanced pediatric care facility in the world -- the state-of-the-art Hale Family Building -- which will open in 2022.
• Expand its regional network of integrated care to deliver routine care close to where patients live and more specialized care at Boston Children's.
• Collaborate with the City of Boston and partner with more than 60 community-based organizations throughout Massachusetts to promote racial and health equity through a multi-year community investment strategy.
• Support the hospital’s mission with the most ambitious capital campaign of any pediatric hospital, raising more than $1.5 billion in eight years.
