Kevin Churchwell CEO | Overview

BOSTON (October 12, 2020) -The Board of Trustees of Boston Children’s Hospital has named Kevin B. Churchwell, M.D., the Hospital’s next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Dr. Churchwell is currently President and Chief Operating Officer of the Hospital.

Dr. Churchwell will assume his new role on March 31 of next year; current CEO Sandra L. Fenwick will retire that day.

“Dr. Churchwell has the experience and vision to be an outstanding CEO and to extend Boston Children’s leadership in advancing and improving child health,” said Douglas A. Berthiaume, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “As our new CEO he will build on his impressive set of achievements over the past seven years in a number of senior leadership roles at the Hospital. All of us on the Board of Trustees look forward to continuing to work with him to strengthen and expand the hospital’s leadership in care, research, education and community support.”

More than a year ago, in response to CEO Fenwick’s notice to the Board of Trustees of her intent to retire in the spring of 2021, the Board initiated a process to select a new CEO. The vote last week by the Board to name Dr. Churchwell CEO was unanimous.

The Board believes his experience, performance and leadership at Boston Children’s – especially addressing and resolving clinical and operational challenges, and supporting the research enterprise – make him the best qualified person for the role. Dr. Churchwell’s steady leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced that belief.

“Dr. Churchwell has been an essential partner, and together we have achieved a great deal,” said Fenwick. “Yet I know he will lead the Hospital to a new level of breakthroughs and possibilities that will change and improve the lives of countless children. Boston Children’s will be in very good hands.”

“I am honored and excited by this opportunity, especially the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary team of talented and committed people,” said Churchwell. “I look forward to building on the more than 150 years of world-leading and world-changing care, discovery and innovation that have defined and distinguished Boston Children’s. I look forward as well to serving as an advocate for investing in children, especially those whose health care needs are currently underserved.”

Dr. Churchwell joined Boston Children’s Hospital in 2013 as Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Chief Operating Officer. He is also an Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

Prior to joining Boston Children’s Hospital, he served as CEO of the Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, which is part of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Churchwell is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Vanderbilt University Medical School. He completed his pediatric residency and a clinical fellowship in Anesthesia and Pediatric Critical Care at Boston Children’s Hospital.
