What are urologic tumors?

Urologic tumors are tumors that occur in a child's urinary tract. There are many different types of urologic tumors, which can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). These can include:

How we care for urologic tumors

We take a team approach to urologic tumors, working together with our colleagues in oncology, radiation oncology, general surgery, and other specialties. For some conditions, our urology physicians work with oncology specialists at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center to provide optimal surgical and oncologic care. For benign tumors, our experienced pediatric urologists offer a number of treatment options aimed at ensuring that your child has the best possible recovery.

Depending on your child’s individual situation and the specific type of tumor, we may be able to use minimally invasive approaches to remove the tumor, which can result in faster healing and less pain and scarring for your child. For certain types of tumors such as those in the testicle, prostate, and bladder, we may be able to use nerve-sparing techniques that help preserve organ function. For eligible patients, we offer fertility preservation services and telemedicine follow-up appointments.
