Topic: Pediatric Sialoblastoma: Evaluation and Management

Summary: Sialoblastoma is a remarkably rare tumor that arises in the primitive duct epithelium of salivary glands during the perinatal period. To date, 62 patients with sialoblastoma have been described in the English-language literature. Due to the rarity of sialoblastoma, it is difficult to predict treatment outcomes or come to a consensus on the best way to manage aggressive cases. The potential for malignancy and recurrence appears to be one of the most important factors affecting the course of treatment. In this study, we report one sialoblastoma case seen at Boston Children’s Hospital and review the other 62 patients with sialoblastoma. This will allow us to analyze and discuss the relative success rates of a variety of management techniques, with a focus on strategies to treat persistent cases with high metastatic potential.
