Currently, we do not know exactly what causes children or adults to develop congenital heart disease (CHD).
Previous research suggests that there are both genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the development of CHD. Congenital heart disease (CHD) may be isolated or part of a larger developmental process. Sometimes a child may have several medical and/or developmental concerns. CHD may be more prevalent in a particular family than expected.
Here at Boston Children's Hospital, we are working together on a research project to try and understand the genetic factors that influence the development of CHD. We hope that information gained from this project will lead to a better understanding of this condition as well as new ways of diagnosing and treating congenital heart disease.
