Peripheral nerve imaging

Microscopic image of peripheral optic nerve in blue and orange.

Peripheral sensory nerves are the input wiring that connects our bodies to the physical world. In our department, a handful of labs work to inspect and chart the course of peripheral nerves in volunteers and patients. They use techniques such as diffusion tensor imaging to track major nerve fibers as they course through the body and enter the central nervous system, and even confocal corneal microscopy to visualize the nerves on the surface of the eye.
