What to expect in the EMPOWER program
At your child’s first visit to the EMPOWER clinic, they will receive a comprehensive medical evaluation. During the evaluation, a physician or nurse practitioner will look for underlying causes of your child’s obesity, as well as any medical complications related to obesity. As part of our initial and ongoing assessments, we’ll also evaluate your child’s mental health. We will talk to you about treatment options appropriate for your child’s age and medical history.
If your family chooses to enroll your child in the EMPOWER program, you will attend a Medical Orientation session as well as an Introductory Group Nutrition session. Both sessions are held virtually. We encourage each patient to attend individual nutrition counseling or group nutrition counseling (or both) throughout the year.
Whether or not your child is prescribed weight management medications, they’ll attend quarterly medical follow-up visits. This enables us to provide safe, effective care. As they progress through the program, your child will have opportunities for additional nutritional counseling, as well as health behavior coaching through the OWL Program.
