What to Expect | Overview
Here’s how to prepare for your time at the Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center.
What to wear daily
- comfortable, appropriate clothing for exercise (T-shirts, gym shorts, leggings, sweatpants, athletic shoes or sneakers with sturdy sole and arch support, etc.)
What to bring daily
- reusable water bottle
- your Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center binder (distributed to participants in the first week)
- laptops or tablets if needed or desired to complete academic work
- headphones for use with computer and phone
Other items to bring as needed
- Any articles of clothing that you currently avoid due to pain or sensitivity. This may include various textured pants (jeans, leggings), various types of shoes (sandals, heels, cleats), or hats (baseball, winter).
- Any athletic gear that you currently avoid due to pain or sensitivity. This may include ski boots, helmets, shin guards, dance shoes, etc.
- Any athletic equipment related to sports that you hope to return to after your admission. This may include a baseball/softball glove, lacrosse stick, field hockey stick, swimsuit and goggles, etc.
Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center schedule
Beginning with the first day of the admission, we ask participants to arrive at 1:45 p.m. The Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center day runs from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays. We will give you a daily schedule that is individualized to your specific needs. All participants engage in both group and individual sessions. Below is a sample of what our participants’ schedules entail.

* — The first day will start earlier and will consist of intake evaluations with the various providers.
Information about meals
Snacks will be provided during your time at the Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center. You are welcome to bring your own snacks if preferred or if you have an allergy. We are not a nut-free facility.

Evenings and weekends
We create treatment plans for participants in the mornings before the program, as well as on the weekends. These plans are crucial to learning how to carry over skills learned at the Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center to home, school, and the larger community. For example, you will receive a Home Exercise Program (HEP) from physical therapy and/or occupational therapy to be completed daily. Our team also works with each family to identify social, leisure, and extracurricular activities that will support you in applying skills learned in the Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center to other environments. For families who are new to the Boston area, our team is happy to offer suggestions for specific evening and weekend activities that will help you meet your treatment goals.
Follow-up visits
The Young Adult Pain Rehabilitation Center team continues to provide support for participants and their caregivers six months after discharge from the program. We accomplish this through two separate follow-up visits. You will meet with a pain physician and behavioral health provider for your initial follow-up, and you will meet with a pain physician at your six-month follow-up.
During a follow-up visit, our team may:
- conduct a physical evaluation of the your pain-related symptoms
- assess your adherence to treatment plans
- re-administer standardized tests and measures
- review progress related to reintegration into all domains of functioning
- discuss barriers to progress and assist in problem solving
- update treatment plans as necessary
