6-month interns/co-ops in machine learning and image analysis: (BS, MS, PhD, postdoc levels), 2021

Open positions

Four full-time research intern/co-op positions are open at the Image, Informatics, and Intelligence (I3) Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), in the Longwood Medical District of Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Timeframe

The positions are full-time and for up to six months. The starting date can be as early as April 1, 2021, and typically in the summer. Qualified interns and co-ops may return to the lab for further research endeavors based on mutual interests.

Salary

During this intern/co-op period, a standard rate of $20, $25, and $40 per hour and 40 hours per week applies to interns/co-ops holding bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees. Returning interns/co-ops for additional research endeavors (intern or full-time) will be paid at corresponding levels in federal and foundational grants.

Topics

Our lab has several research projects at the intersection of data science, machine/deep learning, brain MRI image analysis, big data, and computational neuroscience. The intern/co-op will work with computer scientists, image analysis experts, neuroradiologists, and other collaborators depending on a project of mutual interest. Several projects are open and we encourage interns/co-op students to work on the topic they are most interested in. Each of those topics will have a potential for the intern/co-op to work collaboratively with our team toward first- or co-authored publication(s). Topics include:

  • big data (>80,000) structural, diffusion, and/or functional brain MRI analysis to quantitatively characterize neurodevelopment across the lifespan
  • machine/deep learning of big data brain MRIs to predict age, IQ, neurocognitive outcomes
  • machine/deep learning of MRI and clinical data for brain injuries/tumors, to characterize disease progression and treatment effects

Training

The intern/co-op students will gain hands-on experience in MRI processing, machine/deep learning, data science, computational neuroscience, big data exploration, high-performance cluster computation, and hopefully scientific writing and publication. We will meet at least weekly on Zoom.

Expectation

We look for candidates at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Neuroscience, Psychiatry/Psychology, or a similar engineering or applied field. Programming skills in Python, Matlab, BASH/Unix, High-Performance Computer (HPC) clusters (SGE/PBS/Slurm job schedulers), and other related languages/applications are preferred. Experience in medical image analysis and neuroscience studies is a plus but not required. Publications/presentations or past research experience are helpful but not required. A longer commitment (4-6 months) of full-time work is preferred than 2-3 months.

Working style

We are working remotely until further notice. We meet at least weekly on Zoom.
