Risk model development and validation for prediction of coronary artery aneurysms in Kawasaki Disease in a North American population

Authors: Son MBF, Gauvreau K, Tremoulet AH, Lo M, Baker AL, de Ferranti S, Dedeoglu F, Sundel RP, Friedman KG, Burns JC, Newburger JW

Summary: In this study, Dr. Son and her colleagues in pediatric rheumatology and cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital developed a model for assessing the risk of developing coronary artery aneurysms, a serious complication in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD). Such a model may be helpful in determining treatments for children with KD, and in research studies to learn more about coronary artery aneurysm development in Kawasaki disease.

Treatment intensification in patients with Kawasaki Disease and coronary aneurysm at diagnosis

Authors: Dionne A, Burns JC, Dahdah N, Tremoulet AH, Gauvreau K, de Ferranti SD, Baker AL, Son MB, Gould P, Fournier A, Newburger JW, Friedman KG

Summary: Development of coronary artery aneurysms (CAA) is a serious complication of Kawasaki disease (KD). This publication compared KD patients with CAA treated with either IVIG alone or IVIG with corticosteroids and Infliximab. The results showed that children treated with combination therapy (IVIG, corticosteroids, and infliximab) had less to progression of their aneurysms.

Role of intravenous immunoglobulin in the treatment of Kawasaki disease

Authors: Lo MS, Newburger JW

Summary: IVIG is a treatment used for Kawasaki Disease. Dr. Lo worked with Dr. Newburger of cardiology to summarize the potential ways IVIG works to treat Kawasaki Disease.

Summary: Drs. Cohen and Sundel authored an extensive review of the cause, diagnosis, and treatment of Kawasaki Disease.

Predicting Coronary Artery Aneurysms in Kawasaki Disease at a North American Center: An Assessment of Baseline z Scores

Authors: Son MB, F, Gauvreau K, Kim S, Tang A, Dedeoglu F, Fulton DR, Lo MS, Baker AL, Sundel RP, Newburger JW

Summary: Dr. Son collaborated with other rheumatologists (Drs. Dedeoglu, Lo, and Sundel) and cardiologists (Drs. Newburger and Fulton) at Boston Children’s Hospital to better understand Kawasaki Disease, a type of vasculitis that can affect the blood vessels around the heart. The investigators found that an echocardiogram performed at the beginning of the disease can be used to predict which patients are at greatest risk of developing cardiac complications from Kawasaki Disease.

Evidence-based decision support for pediatric rheumatology reduces diagnostic errors

Authors: Segal MM, Athreya B, Son MB, Tirosh I, Hausmann JS, Ang EY, Zurakowski D, Feldman LK, Sundel RP

Summary: Dr. Sundel and several other pediatric rheumatologists evaluated the diagnostic decision support software called SimulConsult®. The authors showed that physicians who used decisions support from the computer program made less diagnostic errors. The goal is to make this software available to other physicians who may need to treat children with rheumatologic conditions, especially in areas that lack a pediatric rheumatologist.
