Since the summer of 2005, more than 80 college students have participated in our lab’s student training program. Students have the opportunity to observe clinics in the Developmental Medicine Center, attend research study visits, and assist with tasks like data entry and participant recruitment.
We have been fortunate to receive funding in support of our student program from the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program at the Institute for Community Inclusion at Boston Children's Hospital. LEND programs at sites across the country are funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services, and provide training opportunities for students in any professional discipline who work with children with developmental disabilities and their families. Funding from LEND has allowed us to offer a wider range of educational experiences to our students. It has also allowed us to offer a number of paid student positions, placing this opportunity within reach of students from a broader range of economic backgrounds.
Past students have come from many undergraduate majors, including psychology, pre-med, and life sciences, and have continued on to graduate school, medical school, research jobs, and other positions.
