Workforce Development | Overview
Boston Children’s strives to build a diverse team in order to best serve and care for our patient families. We do this through a variety of workforce development programs that give our employees the educational resources and tools necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals. The hospital also aims to create a pipeline of new talent by offering opportunities that introduce Boston youth and young adults to health care careers. Through numerous partnerships with community organizations, the hospital hires and trains individuals from the communities surrounding the hospital as well as reaches out to residents with job postings.

Workforce development
Employees can access a range of courses from English for speakers of other languages, computer skills, to health pre-requisites. Career coaching services can help employees to identify their goals and map out a plan to move forward. Internal Mobility Services is a program designed to engage employees in finding upward and lateral positions across Boston Children’s. In addition, employees can participate in an annual education fair, find scholarships and ways to finance their education, and take college level courses.
Youth programs
Our flagship program for youth is the COACH (Community, Opportunities, and Advancement at Children’s Hospital) Internship Program, which provides Boston youth with paid internships, career exploration workshops, and networking at the hospital. Alumni of COACH can return for college internships or other school year opportunities. Additionally, we partner with the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion to offer a career exploration program called Building Careers in Health and STEM. JVS Transitions to Work, MGH Aspire, and Bunker Hill Community College Learn & Earn Program are the hospital’s partners in offering other internships.
Community programs
Boston Children’s partners with several organizations around job training including JVS (ARCH, Pharmacy Tech, Central Sterile Processing), African Bridge Network Fellowship Program, Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program, Bunker Hill Community College, and Madison Park Development Corp. We also partner with more than 50 community-based organizations for job seeker referrals. Finally, we are currently funded by the Commonwealth Corp. to run two job training programs in conjunction with the Behavioral Health Workforce Initiative and Patient Access Workforce Initiative.
Employee programs
Employees are encouraged to participate in workforce development programs that help them develop their skills with the goal of growing our own talent. Boston Children’s provides educational courses, career resources, and tools for employees to achieve personal and professional goals. It also offers career pathways where individuals can train for a new role within Boston Children’s. This is part of the hospital’s strategy to build a culture of career development for employees and managers, as well as increase retention of staff.
