Workforce Development | Overview
Boston Children’s strives to build a diverse team in order to best serve and care for our patient families. We do this through a variety of workforce development programs that give our employees the educational resources and tools necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals. The hospital also aims to create a pipeline of new talent by offering opportunities that introduce Boston youth and young adults to health care careers. Through numerous partnerships with community organizations, the hospital hires and trains individuals from the communities surrounding the hospital as well as reaches out to residents with job postings.

Youth programs
Student development programs
We are dedicated to nurturing the talents and ambitions of youth and young adults through our student development programs. Our mission is to inspire and prepare the future leaders of the healthcare industry by offering a variety of enriching experiences and educational opportunities.
Our programs provide invaluable on-the-job observations, hands-on experiences, and essential workplace and professional skills training. By doing so, we aim to build a robust pipeline of qualified individuals ready to excel in the healthcare field.
COACH summer internship program
Our flagship initiative, the COACH (Community, Opportunities, and Advancement at Children’s Hospital) summer internship program, offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the healthcare environment. Participants gain first-hand experience, mentorship, and the chance to contribute to meaningful projects.
Year-round partnerships
In collaboration with our Office of Health Equity and Inclusion, as well as respected Boston-area community and educational partners, we offer a variety of student programs throughout the year. These partnerships ensure that students have continuous access to resources, support, and opportunities to explore diverse health careers.
Community programs
Boston Children’s partners with several organizations around job training including JVS (ARCH, Pharmacy Tech, Central Sterile Processing), African Bridge Network Fellowship Program, Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program, Bunker Hill Community College, and Madison Park Development Corp. We also partner with more than 50 community-based organizations for job seeker referrals. Finally, we are currently funded by the Commonwealth Corp. to run two job training programs in conjunction with the Behavioral Health Workforce Initiative and Patient Access Workforce Initiative.
Employee programs
Employees are encouraged to participate in workforce development programs that help them develop their skills with the goal of growing our own talent. Boston Children’s provides educational courses, career resources, and tools for employees to achieve personal and professional goals. It also offers career pathways where individuals can train for a new role within Boston Children’s. This is part of the hospital’s strategy to build a culture of career development for employees and managers, as well as increase retention of staff.
