Neosaxitoxin for Prolonged Local Anesthesia | Overview
Researchers have long sought a safe, long-acting, local anesthetic that would be clinically useful for patients during or after surgery or with any painful condition that is amenable to nerve blockade. Such a drug or combination could potentially provide days rather than hours of pain control without the necessity for indwelling catheters and pumps. Dr. Berde is the current IND holder for Neosaxitoxin (NeoSTX), a site-1 sodium channel blocker that provides prolonged local anesthesia in animals and humans.
Our group is conducting a series of clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of NeoSTX, alone and in combination with other local anesthetics.
Who can participate?
- Males only
- 18-35 years old
- No major health problems
- No known allergies to local anesthetics
- Not regularly on pain controlling medications
