To help you stay informed on our procedures, check out the below family education sheets for information on indirect calorimetry studies, how to prepare for a patency capsule test, and more.

Family education sheets

Indirect Calorimetry Study: An indirect calorimetry (IC) study is a test to measure your child’s Resting Energy Expenditure (REE). This is the amount of energy — or calories — the body uses at rest. To learn more about indirect calorimetry, download the family education sheet.

Patency Capsule Test: This is a type of test that helps us see if an object the size of a capsule can pass through your child’s intestine. As part of the test, your child will swallow a large pill called a “patency capsule”. Learn more about the patency capsule test and how to prepare your child for one by downloading the family education sheet.

Lactose Breath Test: A lactose breath test is performed to find out if your child has a hard time digesting lactose. Samples of your child’s breath are collected before and after they have a drink with lactose (sugar found in milk products). Learn more about the lactose breath test by downloading the family education sheet.

Glucose Breath Test: A glucose breath test is done to see if there are too many bacteria (germs) present in your child’s stomach. Samples of your child’s breath are collected before and after drinking a glucose drink (sugar water). Learn more about the glucose breath test by downloading the family education sheet.
